Isomorphic Sonification of Spatial Relations

چکیده
The perception of size and form of tactile objects relies on visualization, at least for people who are sighted or those who have had longer experience of seeing (‘late blind’, Warren 1994). Non-visual alternative representations are 3D tactile or acoustic representations. This paper describes an auditory display (Agranovski et all 1996), that provides simultaneous playback and management by eight independent virtual sound sources (m, n) or by cursors formed by four speakers located in front of the listener as shown in Figure 1.

Sonification of Spatial Data
Sonification is the use of sound and speech to represent information. There are many sonification examples in the literature from simple realizations such as a Geiger counter to representations of complex geological features. The data that is being represented can be either spatial or non-spatial. Specifically, spatial data contains positional information; the position either refers to an exact...
متن کاملElectroencephalogram Steady State Response Sonification Focused on the Spatial and Temporal Properties
This paper describes a sonification approach of multichannel electroencephalogram (EEG) steady-state responses (SSR). The main purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of sonification as an analytic tool for SSR. The proposed sonification approach aims to observe the spatial property (i.e. location of strong brain activities) and temporal property (i.e. synchrony of wave forms ac...
متن کاملSonification of Remote Sensing Data: Initial Experiment
We are generating music from a particular view of a multi-dimensional geographic information system (GIS) data set to alert a viewer to the existence of hidden clusters of data points. This paper describes some results from an early experiment with generating music from a 2-d slice of the data and testing whether these representations are easily understood by beginning users. 1. Basic Definitio...
متن کاملSurface Interactions for Interactive Sonification
This paper presents novel interaction modes for Model-Based Sonification (MBS) via interactive surfaces. We first discuss possible interactions for MBS on a multi-touch surface. This is followed by a description of the Data Sonogram Sonification and the Growing Neural Gas Sonification Model and their implementation for the multi-touch interface. Modifications from the original sonification mode...
متن کاملInteractive Sonification of Neural Activity
We discuss our ongoing research in sonification of neural activity as demonstrated in the “Fish and Chips” and “BrainWaves” projects. We argue that sonification can serve as an effective technique for the representation of complex spatial information such as neural activity due to the auditory system’s ability to perceive stimuli at a wide spatial cover and its inclination to perceive spatial p...
